If this year is anything to go by the ‘golden age’ of the silver screen is far from over. The young and the young at heart flocked to their local cinemas, sunk into their seats and were entertained with adventure, action, comedy or romance. Gone are the days of epic stories being passed down from father to son, generation to generation being inspired by the heroes of old. Today we use the magic of cameras, celluloid and screens to help bring ideas to life. .

Adults and young children are ignoring the primary message from the hit song of the summer and are failing to ‘Let It Go’. Rather the Frozen theme has been heard on street corners, in shops, clubs and on the lips of anyone with an iPod. It has been the subject of parody, homage and acoustic renderings on YouTube and the clips have been viewed millions upon millions of times. As an amateur movie buff I love relaxing and watching movies. For me the thrill is not in what is seen on the screen but what is unseen. I love trying to catch the killer before the detective, figure out a plot twist before it happens or wonder just how the amazing heist was pulled off.

We spend, on average, one and a half to two hours in a cinema staring at the screen and I want to feel that I get my money's worth. But it’s when the movie fails to live up to the expectation, when it was green-lit simply for the fact that it would make money, then it feels like a true waste of potential. When directors, actors and crew are passionate about the movie they’re making then it truly shines off the screen. But when everyone there was just collecting a paycheck? When the actors delivered their lines half-heartedly, when a director made an obvious error? These are what detract from the magic of cinema. These are the mistakes that make me feel that I have wasted two things that are beyond precious to me: time and money. Thankfully most of the recent movies I have watched were definitely worth the time and money. As a 20 year old I would not voluntarily watch Mr. Peabody & Sherman, but Captain America: The Winter Soldier, was definitely entertaining and worth the 136 minutes.

My friends and family can attest that I am a conscious penny saver. But my one big indulgence is spending money to watch a great film. As many other young women out there, I adore Channing Tatum. His body alone is enough to capture your attention and to imagine yourself cooking a variety of foods on his abs.. He and Jonah Hill are an incredible dynamic duo who make me want to jump and buy a ticket to see their newest movie, 22 Jump Street. It most likely won’t make me think intellectually but it will hopefully make me laugh and will keep me entertained.

As amateur and expert movie buffs, what do you think about the popular movies of 2014?
